Interview: Vicki Ferrence Ray Another Satisfied User!

Vicki Ferrence Ray

On occasion, I have been fortunate enough to speak with and learn about some of the interesting people who use J.R.LIGGETT’S  products. A few months back, Vicki Ferrence Ray, of Wexford, Pennsylvania, was generous enough to take the time to share her thoughts with me (and you!)  on how perfectly J.R.LIGGETT’S fits into her life and meets her needs.

A positive and dynamic woman, Vicki is the Senior Director of National Programs for Hugh O’Brian Youth Leadership, a non-profit organization founded by actor Hugh O’Brian.  HOBY selects high school youth who have shown leadership potential, and through the tireless work of thousands of volunteers and community and business leaders, the young people are trained and inspired to develop and enhance their leadership skills, and in turn, to go out into our world and make a positive difference.

Vicki, who enjoys traveling for work and pleasure, originally discovered J.R.LIGGETT’S Shampoo Bar in an advertisement in Real Simple magazine about five or more years ago and thought, “Oh, that looks interesting and like it would be good for travel.”  She says,  “I was looking for a way to lighten the load and reduce the number of things in my toiletry kit, and that’s where it all started. I began using it and then I just really liked that it didn’t have a plastic bottle, and I could use one product instead of two–shampoo and conditioner–and now, I’m converted and I’m using it not just for travel, but all the time.”

“I recently acquired a new hair stylist, and he told me that I have the healthiest hair he has ever seen. He’s been a stylist for over 20 years and has seen enough heads of hair, to know. He said, “whatever you’re doing, keep doing it!” I told him that was really easy!  When I revealed I was using J.R.LIGGETT’S Shampoo Bar, he said he had never heard of it, but to keep using it, so I am! I’ve also noticed that in the winter, with using this shampoo, I seem to have less static in my hair.”

“I’ve given the shampoo bars out as stocking stuffers to family, who, even though they aren’t as much as a convert as I am, they do like it for travel. I’ve also consistently ordered and used Nanak’s Lip Smoothee and I like that also.”

“I love the company, love the products, love the whole premise behind the company. Originally, I was just looking for something for travel, but now I also like the fact that it is environmentally friendly and has very little packaging.”

Vicki is excitedly anticipating a new Whole Foods that is currently under construction in her area and will be open next year. She says, “I’ll look for J.R.LIGGETT’S there!”

Packin’ Some Style & Substance!

I’m packing for a visit to see my brother and daughter… a 1500 mile drive and I’ll be taking these for a ‘test’ drive… ‘cept I already know how awesome they are! Maybe I’ll share?

J.R.LIGGETT’S  Foam Face & Body Wash is an absolute delight for the body and senses. Perfect for the shower, the kitchen, or travel. An essential element for your daily use and enjoyment.

I discovered this product soon after falling in love with J.R.’s Shampoo Bar, and I’d say it comes in a close second in my book.  It  gently cleanses your body, leaving a healing layer of unique oils that are readily absorbed. And just like all of J.R.LIGGETT’S products, this does not contain any harsh detergents to dry out your skin, only nourishing, moisturizing oils such as, saponified olive oil, coconut oil, castor oil with sunflower oil, almond oil, hemp or jojoba oil, and so good for you, Vitamin E.  You know, I  have absolutely no qualms whatsoever about using this… I’m not wondering if the ingredients are harmful and going to cause health issues ‘down the road’, so to speak.

Believe me, this is cracker-jack stuff. It comes in liquid form, just shake it up before use… the handy pump delivers the softest, most wonderfully scented, luxurious foam you could ever imagine. Smooth it on your face and body and find yourself transported to a wonderful, heavenly place. This stuff smells so good… as I’m using it on my face, gosh, I hate to wash it off!   I’ve discovered that this is a natural for shaving as a couple of pumps of foam goes a long way! It glides on smooth and gentle, rinses off completely, and moisturizes skin to perfection. When you dry off, all you feel is soft skin–no greasy, slick feeling, and a subtle, enticing scent.  Perfect for a facial cleanser; not harsh nor abrasive, it cleans just enough and won’t strip your needed natural skin oils. As we all are aware, dry moisture-robbed skin can lead to premature wrinkles and other bothersome issues.

Here’s the zinger, though… J.R.LIGGETT’S Foam Face & Body Wash is sporting beautiful, bright, newly designed labels! J.R. has been working on these beauties for the past couple of months and I think they are quite attractive!  Fresh. Enticing. Clean. Ethereal! (I love that descriptive word!)  Think how terrific these are going to look in the shower…they are decor ready!  But just don’t leave them languishing in the bathroom… these would fit in perfectly right by the kitchen or bathroom sink.  Great for frequent hand washing, as they are incredibly mild and gentle–no SLS!

Several appealing scents are available to choose from..

  • Western Slope…  truly original, 100% distinctive, intriguing and mysterious, romantic and pure, Native American in origin. (This is my all time favorite–the scent just transports me to a wonderful place!)
  • White Sage…  delightfully masculine, not flowery nor heavy and overpowering.  A nice, clean, scent. I found this to be quite cool and bracing
  • Lemon-Lime…  a light citrus smell, a most refreshing and cool, clean scent that invigorates yet calms and relaxes.   Mmmm… think beaches, warm, tropical breezes… yeah, that. (Great kitchen look, too!)
  • Unscented…  for people with allergic reactions, chemical sensitivities, or to use with Aroma Therapy.   Spot-on for when you might not want competition for another scent you may be wearing.

And two very convenient sizes… (+ the ultimate $ saver… read on!)

  • 1.5 ounce foamer that is terrific for travel; tuck it in your purse, overnight bag, etc. Also a great prezzie to drop into a small gift sack–a great way to introduce J.R.LIGGETT’S to friends or family.
  • 7 ounce that’s designed for your bathroom sink or shower, but don’t be shy… set this next to the kitchen sink to take full advantage of the necessity of frequent hand washing.
  • 16 ounce refill to promote a reusable and recyclable alternative to a disposable oriented world. And get this deal… if you send in your empty 16 ounce refill bottle, J.R.LIGGETT’S  will refill it for just $15.99 which includes the cost of shipping!

I hope this wasn’t too long–thanks for making it to the bottom of the page, but I wanted to get this info to you about another great J.R.LIGGETT LTD product.  There are still more to come!

Whatever Happened to Customer Appreciation?

I want to share this experience while it’s still fresh in my mind…

I needed a few items from the discount store the other day, and against my better knowledge, I stopped in at a store I don’t like simply because the store was closer to my house than the store I do like. Big Mistake.  I found the items I wanted–even though the store has the consistent look of having (barely) survived a tornado.  As I stood at the check out counter, and paid for my purchase, I didn’t as much hear a “Thank you” from the employee–who is an assistant manager at that!  As my bag was pushed towards me, I said, “Thank you.”  No reaction. I thought I’d try again… “Thank you.”  Now, another employee has appeared and the two employees are chatting (and ignoring me).  Then, I got (semi) wild.  I thought, “I’m giving this another shot–maybe third times a charm?”  Me, forcefully:  “Thank you!”   Oh, finally I was noticed!   “Yes, you have a nice day now.”    Hello?  I think you are to be the one thanking me!

Have these employees not had any training in customer relations and appreciation? Does management ever wonder why their store is nearly void of customers?  Do I need to tell them where they could improve? I simply must!

I have read that most customers will not complain to management if they are not satisfied with a product or service. Instead, depending on how unhappy the customer is, they will tell between nine to sixteen friends and acquaintances about their less-than-satisfying experience. Some thirteen percent will tell more than twenty people, and more than two out of three customers who have received poor service will never make a purchase from that store again, and worse, management will never know why.  Today, with minute-by-minute updates on Facebook, Twitter, and other social networking media, a business dare not treat a customer poorly nor try to push an inferior product and expect to get away with it.  The world will know!

Years ago, I worked in sales at a job I absolutely loved. I had a terrific boss, the products we offered were fun, creative, interesting. I loved helping the customers find the perfect gift and I loved all the creative aspects of that job. I’d even stop in on my day off and if the employees were busy, I’d help a customer just because I enjoyed helping.  Okay, enough about my dream job… but my point is, early on in my employment, our boss said to a group of us, “Who signs your paycheck?”  First thought, well, the boss does. No.  The customer does.  If we do not satisfy the customer, there will be no customer. If we do not stand behind the product, there will be no business. The best product in the world is useless if the customer is not treated like, well…gold.  The customer is that valuable!

When reading J.R.LIGGETT’S Facebook page, I have noticed how timely and responsive J.R. has been to customers questions, suggestions, issues and even praises.  If you call J.R.LIGGETT’S to place an order or to talk with management, you won’t have to jump through hoops by pressing numbers for different departments, and then, finally reaching someone’s voice mail because they’re “either busy with another call or out of the office.”  (Exasperated look on face here.)   J.R. is involved. He’s reachable. He cares.

And now, this blog. Another avenue to connect with you. Another opportunity for us to learn from you–what you think, what you like, where you think there could be improvements. And here’s what I get excited about–sometimes it doesn’t take much! Four Followers have signed up to receive weekly notifications that there is a new post on this blog! (Actually, I was ecstatic at one!) It’s always good to know that someone is listening, that someone cares!  Hey! I guess that’s what customer appreciation is about–listening… caring… responding.  On Facebook, Twitter, or J.R.LIGGETT’S blog, we are ‘hear’ for you!

Thank you, thank you… we can’t say it enough!  Thank you for ‘Following’, for commenting, for spreading the word about J.R.LIGGETT’S Shampoo Bar and products. We appreciate your business!

What has been your worst or best experience when purchasing a product? Has it been like Rodney Dangerfield’s?  “I get no respect…”

The Land Connection

I’ve just returned from a 250 mile drive to visit my brother, passing a vast amount of fertile, rolling farm land. My drive lasts 5 hours, and during the entire time, I never turn on a radio, nor listen to any music.  I prefer to use this time to observe the land, a hawk floating effortlessly on warm air currents in the wide open sky, and to think.  If I allow any auditory distractions, it’s the sound of the wind, a train whistle, or the occasional song of a Meadowlark; it’s pure, sweet call that drifts across the prairies.  At this time of year, corn, soybeans and alfalfa (leafy feed for cows, horses, etc.) are being harvested, and the wheat crop is in. Corn and soybeans are being trucked from the fields to grain elevators, and alfalfa must be cut, dried, set into rows, baled, and then stored for the winter.  For hundreds of miles, across flat land, hills, dips and hollows, I see where the American farmer has stitched his patchwork of crops across the fabric of this country.  A farmer can be proud when he sees the fruit of his planning, sowing and reaping–it is his connection to the land–to this earth.

For centuries, farmers have known the wisdom of being good land, air, and water stewards. They have learned it from those who came before them; those who, by the sweat of their brow, dogged determination, vision, and the long-held value of a strong work ethic, were able to create a good and healthy life here on earth.   To be successful in farming– or whatever you do, there is no other way.  When practicing good land or crop management, quality is the key–whether it be choosing the proper crop for certain soils, quality seed, or diligent crop management, if you don’t start with the best, you’ll find yourself with inferior results. I won’t soon forget the time I met up with a person who didn’t understand the reality of farming… he said, “All you have to do is plant the seeds and then just love ’em…”   I smiled. I’d been there before.

J.R.LIGGETT’S wouldn’t be where it is today–as the top choice for a 100% natural shampoo bar, if J.R. wasn’t a good steward of his resources… if he didn’t make a conscious choice to use prime ingredients for his shampoo bars, if all he did was arbitrarily throw some concoction together and hope for the best and, “…just love them”.  He has a vision, he has a plan. He possesses the all- American work ethic, and has the drive to bring you the best product that can possibly be made. He cares about quality, he respects our resources, and his utmost desire is to give you a product that is healthy for our bodies and our environment.

There are no second-rate nor inferior ingredients in J.R.LIGGETT’S Shampoo Bars, just pure, fresh, crystal-clear New Hampshire spring water, and unadulterated, natural, healthy for you and me, plant-based oils. Jojoba promotes skin healing and fights bacteria. Peppermint neutralizes dryness of the scalp and reduces redness and its fresh scent invigorates and lifts our spirits. Aloe Vera is excellent for cuts, burns, minor skin irritations, and is very soothing and healing.  Tea Tree is capable of killing stubborn germs and blends easily with our skin’s own natural oils making it inhospitable for the growth of organisms.  Rosemary contains anti-oxidants, is good for a dry itchy scalp, and stimulates blood flow and circulation.  Lavender is quite effective on lice, lice eggs, and nits. It’s also well-known for its calming and relaxing properties.  Almond oil, a great source of Vitamin E, also moisturizes and is excellent for itchy, dry skin. It makes hair strong and thick and controls hair loss. All are plant-based oils for an over-the-top quality product. J.R.LIGGETT’S  products do not contain the harsh detergent Sodium Lauryl Sulfate, and never will.  J.R. knows that lax planning, inferior ingredients,  and sloppy product management produces an inferior ‘crop’… he understands the long-lasting consequences of poor choices, of poor stewardship.

By using J.R.LIGGETT’S Shampoo Bars and his top of the line products, I can feel, smell and experience my own personal connection to the land that sustains me. I can grab onto and hold in my hand values that aren’t temporal, but lasting.  The refreshing fragrances and soothing, healing oils can take me away to a natural, healthy, wholesome place in my life–a quiet corner, a private place where I know that I too, am making a difference in my own small way, to make this world a better home for all who live here.

Oh Baby!

Baby in Tub

Babies and Sodium Lauryl Sulfate.  Not a wise combination.  Why?

Being good parents, we want to protect our children from harm, whether it be safety latches on cabinets, gates across the stairs, child proof locks on doors, or any of the other precautions. We want to feed them the healthiest foods, and we hope to give them the best medical care.  As adults with the responsiblity to care for these little ones, we need to think and choose carefully when it comes to skin care products for our children.

Sodium Lauryl Sulfate is a negatively charged detergent and is used all over the world. SLS is the universal standard used to irritate skin in clinical testing so medical researchers can test ingredients to see how fast the skin heals.  It is commonly found in liquid soaps and shampoos, bubble baths, bath and shower gels, and in most toothpaste marketed throughout the world.  SLS has shown penetration into the eyes, as well as systemic tissues (brain, heart, liver, etc.). Because SLS and related substances are widely used in many populations on a daily basis in soaps (think how many times we wash our hands each day! and shampoos, there is an immediate concern relating to the penetration of these chemicals into the eyes and other tissues. This is especially important in infants, where considerable growth is occurring, because a much greater uptake occurs in tissues of younger eyes, and SLS changes the amounts of some proteins in cells from eye tissues. Tissues of young eyes may be more susceptible to alteration by SLS.¹

A few days ago, as I was doing more research on SLS, I came across conflicting viewpoints. Some were stating that there is such a minute amount of SLS in products, and since they are combined with water and are not on the skin for an indefinite amount of time, they are relatively harmless. One statement read that if SLS was so dangerous and harmful, why is the FDA allowing  it in products?  Hmmm… Federal Drug Administration or good old-fashioned Mom Sense?  I may be exaggerating here a tad, but with the information I’ve come across, I’d way rather err on the side of caution-especially when it comes to my child. Besides, we’re not talking about just one time exposure here to SLS… we’re talking years and involving numerous products over a lifetime. Why not start off on the right foot?  Why not choose products that do not contain a potentially harmful chemical? Aren’t our children worth protecting from what we have do control over?

And yes, now ‘the sell’. But surely it’s not a hard sell.  J.R.LIGGETT’S Shampoo Bars (and indeed, all his products) do not contain SLS.  Never have, never will.  So incredibly gentle, with no harmful detergents to strip our natural hair (and skin) oils. Formulated with all natural, edible, plant-based oils to balance baby’s own scalp and body oil, fresh, clean New Hampshire spring water (J.R. claims it’s the best in the country!), and specific herbal properties that address various skin and hair issues and moisturizing ingredients to alleviate dryness. There now… don’t we feel better now?  Doesn’t that make you feel better?  We have a brain, we can make a choice, a wise, healthy choice. Take a look here to choose which one is best for your baby.

“Baby” Size!

And here’s where the fun part comes in–I’m pretty excited about this… J.R.LIGGETT’S  has the most wonderful little shampoo bars that are just perfect for babies–and baby gifts! Yes!  It is true!  This mother would not lie to you!  They are a ‘trial’ sized .65 ounce bar and are so incredibly cute and absolutely perfect to tuck inside a gift sack or roll up inside those darling little baby wash cloths. Add a nice collection of the shampoo bars to a sweet little terry cloth bath towel or bath set. Tuck ’em in some soft little socks… you get the picture Momma!  When the gift is unwrapped and passed around that circle of women (you know the drill), everyone will be talking and asking about the bar. Now you can be a spokesperson for some awesome, healthy goodness for babies– time to share the knowledge–time to share the wisdom.  Tell them you heard it from another mother you know… (winks)!

Tip: J.R.LIGGETT’S Shampoo Bars are mildly scented, or not scented at all! Great for expectant mothers who are experiencing that issue of scent-sensitivity in their early trimester. And why not try J.R.LIGGETT’S Body Oils to moisturize skin and help ward off those tummy-stretching marks!
